Sullivan Burbank served as a sergeant major in the 15th infantry in 1799 and 1800. He moved to Lexington, Kentucky in 1801, rejoined the army at the beginning of the War of 1812, and was wounded at the Battle of Lundy's Lane. Burbank remained in the army after the war, and was stationed at many posts including Fort Snelling, Minnesota. By 1830, he had been promoted to major, and resigned from the army in 1839.
