Rare D.J. Millard M-1860 Light Cavalry Saber – Relic Condition
Rare D.J. Millard M-1860 Light Cavalry Saber – Relic Condition
Offered here is an authentic and highly collectible M-1860 Light Cavalry Saber, produced under the smallest government contract for sabers during the Civil War—just 10,000 units—by the D. J. Millard Company of Clayville, New York. This early-production piece reflects both the scarcity and historical value of Millard-made weapons.
A successor to the heavier M-1840 “Wristbreaker,” the M-1860 was favored for its lighter weight and improved maneuverability, weighing approximately 3½ pounds in the scabbard. This example features a 35" curved blade, just over an inch wide, with a 27" wide fuller and an 18¼" narrow fuller.
The reverse ricasso bears the clear maker’s mark:
“D. J. MILLARD / CLAYVILLE N.Y.”
The opposite side is stamped:
“US 1862”, confirming its wartime production.
This saber is in relic condition—it shows significant pitting and is missing the handle wrap, but remains structurally sound. Due to its limited production and historical relevance, Millard sabers are difficult to find and sought after by collectors.
A rare opportunity to own a genuine Civil War cavalry saber from a hard-to-find maker—priced affordably for its condition and scarcity. Don’t miss this chance to add an authentic piece of American military history to your collection.
