William S. Rosecrans, (born Sept. 6, 1819, Kingston Township, Ohio, U.S.—died March 11, 1898, Union General and excellent strategist early in the American Civil War (1861–65).
He was the commanding General in major battles such as Corinth, Stones River, and Chickamauga where he was relived of duty by General Grant.
