About General Gideon J. Pillow:
Gideon Johnson Pillow (1806–1878) was a Confederate general whose military and political career spanned decades, marked by ambition and controversy. A Tennessee native and prominent lawyer, Pillow first gained national attention during the Mexican-American War, where he served as a major general and earned both praise and criticism for his battlefield performance. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the Confederate Army and was appointed brigadier general. Pillow is perhaps best known for his role in the 1862 Battle of Fort Donelson, where his indecisive leadership contributed to the Confederate surrender—though he famously fled the fort before the capitulation.
