Original U.S. Springfield Model 1816 .69 Caliber Musket – Civil War-Era Percussion Conversion
Offered here is an outstanding example of an original U.S. Springfield Model 1816 Musket, originally produced in 1833 and later converted to percussion for use during the American Civil War. This musket features a beautiful, even patinaacross the metal surfaces, attesting to its long service life and authenticity.
The lockplate is crisply stamped with an eagle over "U.S." ahead of the hammer, and marked “Springfield 1837” at the rear. The barrel bears the correct “V” and “P” proof marks, as well as a matching 1837 date. The action is tight and fully functional, with a crisp hammer fall — a testament to the musket’s excellent mechanical condition.
The full-length barrel retains its original ramrod, and the stock remains solid, showing expected wear from age and field use. A light military inspector’s cartouche can still be seen on the reverse side of the lock, adding to its authenticity.
Converted from flintlock to percussion—standard practice for many arms in the early stages of the Civil War—this musket represents the type widely used by both Union forces at the outbreak of the war and Confederate troops throughout the conflict.
A fine historical piece with great character, ideal for any Civil War, early U.S. military, or antique arms collection.
