Original WWI AEF Trench Art Sweetheart Photo Frame – German Artillery Shell – April 1918
Offered is a fantastic piece of World War I trench art, fashioned from an original Imperial German brass artillery cartridge case and converted into a heart-shaped photograph frame.
The brass is extensively hand-worked with punched/stippled decoration, including “A.E.F.” across the upper portion, representing the American Expeditionary Forces.
The centerpiece is a large heart-shaped opening, almost certainly intended to display a small photograph, giving this piece wonderful sweetheart or home-front character.
Even better, the original German cartridge head remains intact and clearly marked:

This firmly dates the original German shell case to the final year of World War I. The combination of a wartime-dated German cartridge case and American AEF decoration makes this considerably more interesting than an anonymous piece of trench art.
The shell case has been heavily cut down and transformed, with the cartridge head serving as the base of the frame. The original primer assembly also remains present.
