Original WWI 1918 French 75mm Artillery Shell Trench Art Vases – Verdun / Meuse – Matching Pair
Offered here is a beautiful pair of original World War I trench art vases, hand fashioned from French 75mm brass artillery shell cases dating to 1918.
Both pieces feature extensive hand-worked decoration with large raised floral and leaf designs surrounded by a heavily stippled/hammered background. The amount of work involved in producing these pieces is impressive, with the decoration extending around much of each shell.
Of particular interest are the inscriptions incorporated into the designs. The pair is marked “MEUSE” and “VERDUN,” directly referencing one of the most famous and heavily contested regions of the Western Front.
The original bases retain their military headstamps, including 1918 date markings, providing an excellent period foundation for the pieces.
Each vase measures approximately 10 inches tall. They retain an attractive aged brass patina with expected oxidation, discoloration, scratches, small marks, and other evidence of age. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
These are empty, inert shell cases only and contain no projectile, powder, primer, or other live ammunition components.
A particularly attractive pair of WWI trench art with strong Verdun/Meuse association, 1918-dated cases, and considerably more hand decoration than typically encountered examples. They would make an excellent centerpiece in a WWI, AEF, French militaria, artillery, or trench-art collection.
Sold together as the pair shown.
