Offered is an original Civil War-era Union eagle breast plate brass shell, featuring the classic Federal eagle design with shield, arrows, and olive branch.
This example retains only the stamped brass front shell, with the original lead backing and attachment loops no longer present. The reverse clearly shows the impressed eagle design created during manufacture, while the front retains strong raised detail and an attractive aged brass patina.
Eagle breast plates were widely used on U.S. military accoutrements during the Civil War and are among the most recognizable pieces of Union equipment from the period. Complete examples were typically constructed with a stamped brass face backed with lead and fitted with attachment loops on the reverse.
Despite the missing lead fill, this example displays very good facial detail, including the eagle’s feathers, shield, arrows, and olive branch, making it an appealing display piece and study example.
Condition: Original brass shell only. The lead backing and attachment loops are absent. The outer rim shows age-related wear, slight distortion, and minor edge loss, while the eagle design remains well defined. Please examine all photographs carefully.
A desirable Civil War Union accoutrement relic and an excellent affordable example of the iconic Federal eagle breast plate design.
Shipping included to the lower 48 contiguous United States.
