Original WWI French 75mm Trench Art Artillery Shell Vases – Matched Pair
Offered is a beautiful matched pair of World War I trench-art vases, fashioned from French artillery shell casings and extensively hand worked into an unusually elaborate form.
These are far more decorative than the commonly encountered straight-sided trench-art shell vases. Each casing has been dramatically shaped with a narrow pinched waist and long raised flutes, expanding into an upper section decorated with extensive hand stippling and repoussé work.
The upper portions feature matching shield-shaped cartouches surrounded by foliate decoration, while the mouths have been individually cut into decorative scalloped rims.
Both retain their original military-marked cartridge heads. The markings are consistent with French 75mm artillery shell casings of the WWI period, commonly associated with the famous French 75 field gun.
Features:
* Matched pair of WWI trench-art vases
* Made from original brass artillery shell casings
* French 75mm-type shell cases
* Approximately 12 inches tall each
* Elaborate hand-worked repoussé construction
* Dramatically pinched and fluted bodies
* Hand-stippled backgrounds
* Matching shield/cartouche designs
* Floral and foliate decoration
* Decorative scalloped rims
* Original military headstamps remain visible
* Wonderful untouched aged brass surfaces
These have substantial age-related patina, oxidation, discoloration, scratches, residue and wear. One vase has considerably heavier surface oxidation/patina than the other. They have intentionally not been polished or restored. Please review all photographs carefully for exact condition.
A particularly attractive pair with excellent display presence and considerably more workmanship than the typical engraved shell-case vase.
Perfect for a collection of WWI militaria, trench art, artillery artifacts, folk art, French military history or Great War souvenirs.
shipping will be added upon purchase
