U.S. Model 1850 Foot Officer’s Sword — Tiffany & Co., New York

$1,200.00

Offered is an attractive and historically correct U.S. Model 1850 Foot Officer’s Sword, imported by Paul D. Luneschloss (P.D.L.) and retailed and engraved by Tiffany & Co. of New York, one of the most prestigious American luxury firms of the 19th century.

The blade is finely and ornately engraved, with one side clearly marked “Tiffany & Co. New York,” reflecting Tiffany’s role as retailer and engraver. The obverse side is strongly stamped “P.D.L.” within an elongated oval, identifying Paul D. Luneschloss, a well-known importer of high-quality Solingen blades supplied to American retailers and military outfitters during the mid-19th century.

Blade decoration is especially rich and patriotic, featuring a prominent “US” at the center, a detailed American eagle with shield, and the motto “E Pluribus Unum” above—classic motifs associated with regulation U.S. officer’s swords of the Civil War era. A leather washer remains present at the base of the ricasso, an increasingly scarce original feature that enhances the sword’s authenticity and desirability.

The gilt brass hilt is extensively decorated with ornate leaf motifs, showing fine detail and strong visual appeal. The grip and guard retain a pleasing, aged appearance consistent with period examples.

The original leather scabbard is in good, honest condition, with no breaks in the leather. As is typical with period leather scabbards, care should be taken when withdrawing the blade. The suspension rings are loose, a common age-related trait, but otherwise the scabbard remains solid and attractive.

A desirable and well-attributed example of a Model 1850 Foot Officer’s Sword, combining the craftsmanship of Luneschloss-imported blades with the elegance and prestige of Tiffany & Co. retailer engraving—an excellent addition to any advanced collection of Civil War–era arms, American military antiques, or Tiffany historical objects.
