Offered is an impressive Civil War fired bullet embedded in original battlefield wood, reportedly recovered from the Battle of the Wilderness site in Virginia.
This outstanding relic features a visibly flattened lead bullet lodged within a substantial fragment of preserved wood. The bullet remains embedded in the wood, with the surrounding grain displaying the impact area and deformation caused by the projectile.
According to the accompanying collector’s identification and historical note, the relic was recovered on private property near the location of Lieutenant General James Longstreet’s famous flank attack during the Battle of the Wilderness, fought May 5–7, 1864.
The Battle of the Wilderness marked the opening of General Ulysses S. Grant’s Overland Campaign against General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. The fighting was exceptionally fierce, with Union and Confederate soldiers battling through dense woods and tangled undergrowth.
On May 6, Longstreet’s Confederate troops launched a powerful counterattack against Union forces along the Orange Plank Road. The fighting became particularly destructive as fires spread through the wooded battlefield.
The preserved wood displays prominent grain, natural cracking, weathering, and dark aged surfaces. The exposed lead projectile remains securely embedded, providing a striking example of the destructive impact of Civil War small-arms fire.
The relic is accompanied by its original collector’s descriptive note detailing the reported recovery location and historical significance.
Condition: Original battlefield relic condition with aged, weathered wood, natural splitting, and surface deterioration. The lead bullet exhibits substantial impact deformation and remains embedded in the wood. Please examine all photographs carefully.
