U.S. Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber — C. Roby Co., Dated 1865, Civil War Pattern
Offered is an original U.S. Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber, the most widely carried edged weapon of the American Civil War and the standard saber issued to Union cavalry throughout the conflict.
This example features a slightly cut-down blade with an attractive, even patina fully consistent with age and use. At the base of the blade on the obverse are clearly visible markings including the production date “1865,” the U.S. ordnance stamp “US,” and the inspector’s initials “A.G.M.” The reverse bears the maker’s mark of the C. Roby Company of West Chelmsford, Massachusetts.
Christopher Roby was among the premier and most respected saber manufacturers of the Civil War era, producing large numbers of high-quality cavalry sabers for Federal contracts. Roby-made Model 1860s are well regarded by collectors for their robust construction, clean lines, and consistent workmanship—qualities clearly evident in this piece.
The brass guard and pommel cap display a deep, darkened tone developed over more than 150 years, adding to the saber’s authentic appearance. The original leather grip covering is no longer present; however, the handle remains structurally sound and could be re-wrapped if a more complete presentation is desired.
This offering includes the saber only; the scabbard does not accompany this piece.
A solid, honest example of America’s most iconic Civil War cavalry saber, suitable for collectors of edged weapons, Civil War militaria, or as a foundation piece for a period display.
