This letter was written by a man named William H Bolton of the 2nd Illinois light Infantry, Company L.
This unit happened to also be called Bolton’s Battery, and this man would be the reason why. Earning a name for themselves at battles like Shiloh and Vicksburg, which later led to William Bolton being promoted to a Major.
I found that online as well as a picture of William H Bolton which I have printed out. Interesting piece of history to display!
